MICRODOSING GLP-1 AGONISTS (when less is more)
I will fully admit I have been a skeptic and naysayer when it comes to these medications. I admit I looked at these drugs as another Oprah or Kardashian fad…here today…gone tomorrow…But I was wrong. Enter Longevity Fest 2024 in Las Vegas this past year where “all the buzz” was GLP-1 agonists. The research in regards to not only weight loss but many other medical conditions was mind blowing. Since then I have had the opportunity to provide this protocol to a number of patients with great results. Drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, Mounjaro etc. These drugs were initially developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. GLP-1 agonists mimic the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) in the body. This hormone plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels by enhancing insulin secretion, reducing glucagon release, and slowing gastric emptying, which together help lower blood glucose levels.
In addition to their blood sugar lowering effects, this class of medications has also been shown to help with weight loss. (1) It’s also been studied for a range of health conditions, from cancer to heart disease. (2,3)
The weight loss mechanisms works in that it influences appetite and blood sugar regulation. It also sends signals to the brain that reduce appetite and cravings.
While these drugs offer significant potential benefits, they can also cause a range of potential side effects that can be concerning. Some of the more common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and reflux. There are also more serious side effects. Some users have reported experiencing pancreatitis, a potentially life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas. Symptoms of pancreatitis include severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. If you experience any symptoms like this while on these medications you should seek medical attention asap. I am not a fan of the standard dose escalation used in the conventional medical setting…in comes microdosing…
Maybe you’ve heard the term microdosing. It’s a word used to describe taking psychedelics in small, regular doses.
I have been using lower doses of several medications in a microdosing-type fashion with great success including with GLP-1 agonists. In my opinion, outcomes can be just as effective with less side effects at lower than standard doses.
Microdosing enables you to enjoy the appetite and food noise-suppressing benefits of GLP-1s without experiencing the full range of side effects associated with the standard doses used in diabetes and obesity management.
But you have to do it right! What do I mean by that?
1. Consult with a qualified Clinician
A healthcare provider can help determine whether microdosing is appropriate for you and can guide you on the right dosage. They can also monitor your progress and adjust the dosage as needed to ensure safety and effectiveness. A sound dosing strategy includes consideration of lifestyle, health history and goals
2. Start With A Low Dose
If you and your healthcare practitioner decide that microdosing is a viable option, it's essential to start with the lowest possible dose. Standard GLP-1s come in pre-filled injection pens with specific dosing increments. This makes it difficult to microdose. We work with compounding pharmacies which allow for individualized lower doses which allow your body to adjust to the medication gradually.
3. Be Aware of Potential Side Effects
Even at lower doses, GLP1 agonists can potentially cause side effects, especially since most people are still taking way too much, even if they think they are microdosing. Be vigilant in recognizing any adverse reactions, particularly gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, reflux, or diarrhea. If these side effects become severe or persistent, it's important to consult your healthcare provider immediately.
4. Avoid Self-Medicating or Adjusting Doses Without Guidance
It's important to resist the temptation to self-medicate or adjust your dose without consulting your healthcare provider. This can increase the risk of side effects or reduce the effectiveness of the medication. Always follow the dosing schedule and instructions provided by your doctor.
5. Use GLP-1s as a tool to improve your metabolic health.
This should not be used as an “instead of” strategy. In our practice we stress the importance of good nutrition (as in not eating smaller portions of junk) but ensuring you are getting the proper nutrients, particularly protein in order to maintain metabolic health and muscle. Exercise, particularly strength training is also important. The goal is to minimize loss of valuable muscle and maximize fat loss.
If done correctly, GLP1 agonists can reduce cravings for unhealthy foods, reduce inflammation, restore metabolic health, among many other benefits. Microdosing can be a valuable approach designed to help you fine-tune metabolic health, not deliver quick-fix, overnight, drastic results. It takes commitment and consistency to see results when you’re microdosing. That means microdosing GLP1s may not be the right choice for you if you’re looking to lose a significant amount of weight or have severe metabolic health issues.
To further support your metabolic health and optimize the benefits of microdosing GLP-1 agonists, incorporating targeted supplements can be a valuable strategy. Products like Momentous Vital Aminos Powder Supplement - BCAA & EAA can aid in muscle preservation and recovery, ensuring you maintain lean muscle mass while managing your appetite. Momentous Creatine Monohydrate Powder is another powerful addition, known for enhancing strength, muscle function, and overall performance, which is particularly beneficial if you’re engaging in regular strength training. Additionally, CODEAGE Urolithin A supports mitochondrial health and cellular energy, helping to combat fatigue and support metabolic processes. Integrating these supplements with a balanced diet and exercise regimen can provide comprehensive support for your metabolic health journey.
